When the graphics were represented in either a horizontal or vertical manner, boys outperformed girls in each of the three years of the investigation. In fact, the mean scores for the boys were approximately twelve months ahead of that of the girls. By contrast there was no statistical difference between the performance of boys and girls on items that were represented in a circular structure. These results go beyond Diezmann and Lowrie’s (2008) earlier findings which highlighted gender differences, in favour of boys, on map items that required both horizontal and vertical decoding.

The tasks were set in contexts that had not been addressed in any of the classrooms but covered common mathematical content. Because we wanted to be able to attribute differences in the ways students reasoned during the interviews to differences in the mathematical foci that emerged in class, the research design controlled for other potential explanatory sources, such as timeon-task, student ability, and mathematical content. To control for time-on-task, each class met for the same amount of time – 10 hours.
