On a separate occasion the elder brother, Diego, pointed to the pinecones on the altarpiece and said that these were the rey b’ajlam (“jaguar teeth”), independently confirming the identification.

The linguistic analogy is a good one in that as we learn a second language, we tend to interpret unfamiliar phrases in terms of the construction and vocabulary of our mother tongue. The Santiago Atitlán altarpiece subtly blends Catholicism with indigenous Atiteco theology, presenting layers of meaning that complement each other and reinforce certain underlying core concepts. Yet the unifying ideas are founded in a uniquely Maya view of the world. Traditional Atiteco religion is centered in the confraternity system, a network of voluntary associations dedicated to the veneration of individual saints and associated deiforms.

Although the confraternities are ostensibly Roman Catholic organizations, the administration of the ten in Santiago Atitlán is wholly indigenous and independent of the official Church’s control.
